80 GL 1100 help :(

Postby Goldwing 80 » Tue Jul 19, 2011 6:49 pm

Hi all, names Charlie.I'm not new to bikes, but new to the Goldwing.I just got a new to me 1980 Goldwing 1100 gl,with 37k orig.miles.Been checking out the sight, and it seems like theres a fine group here.Anyway,I just finished changing the oil, plugs, fuel and air filter. She idles fine, but when i go to take off it sounds and feels like its in 4th or 5th gear, and will not go anywhere. If I try to give it more gas,the clunking and jerking just gets worse, and it just stalls out.Fires right back up,and same thing.Brakes are not stuck, and nothing's binding. If I put it on it's center stand,it will go thru all the gears with no problem.Timing belts are ok,butI have 2 new ones on the way.Any help is GREATLY appreciated.I live in Northeast Ohio,(Geneva). If I ever get this thing running right, would like to hook up with some other members, and ride.Ride safe all,...Charlie.

Sounds like it was sitting for awhile you may need to pull and clean/rebuild the carbs..Gl's like higher rpm's to take off at least 1,500+ you cold try try fill the carbs with sea foam(run them dry, pull out tube from the fuel pump attache temproary bottle and fill with Sea foam let it drain into carbs, crank engine over to suck it into the jets).. and let it sit over night that may clean them out a bit..and then run sea foam for a tank or two..but pulling the carbs and rebuilding is best.
HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
NOW INTO 1500'S..RIDING A 1998 SE

FAIR WINDS,

Well,I did the seafoam into the carbs and let it sit over-night.Drained out the half a tank of old gas, replaced with 96 octane and seafoam,and....WOW!!! HUGE difference!!! Just got back from a lil 100 mile cruise! Carbs still need syncd (that will happen next week) and plan on a 4 carb rebuild when riding season is over. Thanks for the suggestion on the seafoam. That stuff is literally a mechanic in a can! lol Ride safe everyone,...Charlie.
