Clearcoat over polished aluminum

Postby PAPete » Wed Jul 27, 2011 8:58 pm

After reading the How-To on polishing aluminum, I polished up the valve covers on my 82 GL1100-I, since they were off anyway, waiting for a valve adjustment. I wet sanded first with 400, then 1000, then 1500 grit (2000 wasn't readily available). Then I buffed with 000 and then 0000 steel wool and finished up with Mother's aluminum polish. I'm very pleased with the shine I got; looks like chrome, not aluminum.
In an effort to keep them that way, I'm considering Duplicolor clearcoat for engines, good to 500°F. They also make a version that is good to 724°F. Which one is recommended for valve covers? Anyone tried both? Thanks

I wouldnt use any clear coat, you can maintain the shine with a little Never-Dull or Mothers once a month or so and then any auto wax . I have tried using other clear coats and wasnt happy with the result. I went to all that trouble to polish things up and the clear actually took away from the shine some, now I had this clear layer that needed to be stripped off to get back to where I was already.Just my 2 cents worth.

Agree, no clearcoat. They might look fine initially but they will discolor and if you get a chip your back to square one. I left my stuff alone and now take Mothers with an old gym sock and give them a quick once over. Put your hand inside ,the sock apply with two fingers then rotate the sock and polish.

I just noticed that you mentioned auto wax. Does that help? I thought that maybe the heat would be a problem for it. Not true?

the Idea behind waxing the polished aluminum is to provide an oxygen barrier for the metal. While aluminum doesnt rust like steel does,it does oxidize (rust) . This aluminum oxide is what makes your shiney bits look dull, polishing removes this thin layer and lets the shine through.Waxing helps keep the oxygen from attacking the carefully polished metal.

I havnt had any problem with auto wax reacting to the heat of the engine.
