Saddle bag lights / Clarion type I radio

Postby jimb2966 » Wed Aug 03, 2011 12:57 am

Hi everyone!

I was wondering if any knows if there is a wiring diagram for the saddle bag lights on 1981 GL1100I. My grandfather bought the motorcycle brand new from the Honda dealer with the lights already installed. I can't find anything in any parts diagrams from the Honda dealer. The lights appear to be Peterson lights but thats all the info I have on them. Also, when I first started the motorcycle before transporting it to my state, the lights were working but they haven't worked since.

Also, does anyone know about the Clarion type I radio systems? I turn the radio on and the display reads 108.0 I am unable to get the radio to tune up or down. Any suggestions how to fix or do I need to find a replacement?

Thanks in advance!

Jim B :)

Disassemble and clean the switch contacts.
Add on lighting is usually tied in under the seat.

Saddle bag lights the connector is under the seat..green for ground, I think blue left side and orange right..also the base in the holder can get turned and then the lights won't work..no contact.
HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83

Fuses also deteriorate with age. If they're add-on lights, there might be an in-line fuse somewhere that has disintegrated.

Thanks for the info everyone!

I checked under the seat, etc and found that there was not a wire connecting to any of the running lights on the saddlebags. (These are add on lights that mount to the chrome guards around the saddle bags.) I found that the add on light assembly was made by Markland Industries back in the 80's. I installed a common wire to all of the running lights. Then I hooked that wire to a hot wire in the taillight assembly. The lights began working but now its started blowing the fuse. I changed the fuse from a 5 amp to a 15 amp and it lasted much longer (about a 5 minute bike ride) then it blew.

Any ideas?

Whow! Way to much current. I'd start looking at the bulb sockets for corrosion and tight connections. Also check the wiring for shorts to the chassis. make sure everthing is clean and tight.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for your replies. I disconnected the wire I had connected to the taillight. Ran a solo wire from the running lights to the accessory connection under the fake tank. Had to upgrade the 5 amp fuse to 10 amp. Working great now!

Thanks again and happy riding!

Ride free!
