Front Brake Caliper Piston Size?

Postby vw4ever » Sun Aug 14, 2011 3:16 pm

So my wife gave me the go ahead to get the Wing on the Road.

While starting to rebuild the brake system I stumbled upaon a very weird situation...the caliper pistons on the left front rotor is the same size as the rear caliper and the calipers look identical.
The weird part is that the right front caliper pistons are much smaller. My question is...whats with that? Is this normal? Why is it normal if it is? And do I have to buy some sort of custom rebuild kit.

I am an aircooled VW mechanic for 35 years. This mechanically just does not make sense to me feeble little brain. PLEASE HELP!!! Need to get bike on road.

1983 GL1100A. Been in storage since 2004. 43xxx miles. All there 100% original except for the Yuasa battery and the Dunlop Tires, both of which I just installed recently.

Maybe someone just stole a front caliper off of another year. I have a feeling the bike might pull one way or the other if I run it as is. Brakes are an IMPORTANT thing. I dont care how fast a vehicle is or how good it handles. If you can't stop...you are screwed.

The 83 do have different sizes on the front. Memory serves me right one is 32mm on the left and 25mm on the right.

The 83 has linked brakes and the the left front is linked to the rear and the right front only works from the lever on the bars..that's why they are different. If you buy a kit for an 83 gl1100 it should be right..
HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
NOW INTO 1500'S..RIDING A 1998 SE

FAIR WINDS,

Thanks RB, but I think that the left front works off the lever and the right off the pedal.

Correct the right works off the rear brake pedal. Cresent Moon does have the correct rebuild kits along with Cycle to Recyle and Parts n More. Some folks have run into problems with the kits coming in with the same size parts from some suppliers.
