Dipstick question?

Postby ritewing9 » Sun Aug 21, 2011 4:12 pm

I am new here , just bought a 1981 GL1100. Isn't the crankcase filler cap supposed to have a dipstick on the cap?
Mine does not have one(looks like it has been broke off).
Just thinking if it is down in the motor , I need to get it out. Might also be why the motor is seized up. Never had a goldwing before, just assumed that you check engine oil with a dipstick. Any help? Thanks

ritewing,
Unless your goldwing has been modified to have a dipstick, it probably wouldn't have one. Chances are if the previous owner didn't know it didn't have one, he probably never checked the view window for the oil level right underneath where the brake pedal is on the engine case. No oil equals seizure for both the engine and the driver!

Thanks newb, I saw that window , but did not realize that was what it was. I do not have a service manual yet, so, just taking it slowly. I had a kawasaki once that had a site window...do not care much for them. Is a possibility that it was run low on oil and seized up. I have no history on this bike , at all. Guess I will have to dismantle motor to see what the problem is. Thanks for the help.

ritewing,
I totally know what you mean by having no history. I'm sure you could tell by the name that I am also a new winger. I just bought my 80 1100 a few weeks ago and am also dealing with some issues with no history on the bike. The good thing about these bikes is that parts are pretty available and also this web site is a huge help. There are some very knowledgable people on here. Good Luck!

Is a moot point, as I solved that issue a month and a half ago. But thanks anyway for the input... With this bike , I am not through with you guys! Most of you are a whole lot more knowledgeable than I. Ya'll have been a great help already. Thanks Jim

Regarding your seized motor: Have you tried removing all the spark plugs and trying to turn it over? One of the cylinders might be hydro locked with gas or water. If it still won't turn over, fill each cylinder with penetrating oil or ATF and let it sit for a day or two, then try turning it over again. Repeat 3 or 4 times. Sometimes these old horses respond to 'prodding'. Any way, it's easy, cheap, and could possibly avoid a tear-down. Just my $0.02

The after market dip sticks are very nice to have, I go on many long trips and it's a snap to check the oil using the dip stick at a filling station at night without getting a flashlight out of the box..I like mine...
