I need tire opinions for my 81 Please!

I would like a response from everyone on this one, If you have a 81 1100 I would absolutely love to read your review on tires, I can't find any RWL [raised white letter] tires for that year but I'm sure someone still makes them, but most importantly I'd like to know how your tires are working out for you or over the years, which is the best, which is the worst, Your opinion matters, I prefer to hear from 81 owners as it relates to my bike but I'd love to hear from everyone from 82-83 too, on their tires anyway ha ha...Thanks Littlebeaver, now lets get this ball a rolling ...

Thank you for the info... I find it amazing that not more people have responded, that's too bad, I thought it would help me out and anyone else looking for a great tire, I have 404's on the bike now, good tire but I was hoping to get more out of the rear one, the front is still perfect..The rear one I don't think I even got 5000 miles out of it, I am a little heavier than most at 270...And I pull a trailer alot so between those two things the tires is getting a work out..Thanks again RBG..

Lil Beav

Don't be disappointed. It would be uncommon for people to have experience comparing tires. I buy the size that the dealer has available.

Dunlop E-3's front and rear. No complaints, just kind of hard to find in stock, usually have to have them shipped in.

When I bought my 82 Aspy 3 seasons ago it needed new tires. I took a educated shot in the dark and bought a set of AvonVenom X.I have been very pleasedn with these tires, they offer good traction both wet and dry. They give light neutral handling. I run them at 41 front and 44 rear. I get 20,000-25000 km(16,000+) miles out of the rear. Thats a good mix of riding styles( aggressive and legal) with and without a trailer.

I like them so much that since I bought the bike I am on the 3rd rear and 2nd front in 3 seasons. They run quiet from day one. Granted they are the only tires I have tried on my Wing but I am happy with these tires.

Is the broad disparity in quoted tire lifespan/mileage due to riding style? Or may one expect a Goldwing to wear out a tire in less than 10,000 miles?

Anybody have any comments on the Shinko 230 130/90-17 74V on the rear of an 91?

What tire pressure do you use ? 40 psi gives the best mileage, I ran Dunlop E2's on my '81 and always got 10-11000 miles on them and It had a sidecar installed. You could install an '82 Wing 16" rim, tires are more available. If you do so, put your '81 brake rotors on the wheel and you can still use your '81 brakes. Doug

Yup, I've got 1 1/2 seasons on my Avon's now, and I couldn't be happier with them.
