Oil Change Concern

Postby micbery » Sat Sep 03, 2011 4:14 pm

Hi all, mister novice here. Just recently bought the old girl and during an oil change I came across a delemia. Seems the washer between the backside of the filter and spring, as discussed clearly in the "How To Article" was not there. I searched high and low, on the filter, on the spring, in the pan and its know where to be found. Somewhat committed, I had to put it back together with out it.

How much of a problem will that be in till I get to town to order a new one?

I didn't even realize there WAS a washer there until someone pointed it out to me after seeing that it was missing in one of my "how to" pictures. I checked the manual, and sure enough, I was missing the washer - and had been for several years. I bought one and put it on. So the fact that I ran without one for years, I think you should be OK until you get the chance to buy one. :)

I have got a question with this. I just changed my oil and when adding my new oil, I cannot tell where the oil level is through the view window. I have turned that screw with the windshield wiper to clean it. I also cleaned off the outside of the window and I still can't tell where the oil level is at. I can see in there, but I just can't tell where the level is. Any advice or comments? I put just a little more than 4 quarts in it. Thanks.

If you put in over 4 qt the level is above the window. The window should be slightly yellow. That would be oil.

wing newb, I too am happy new owner of an 81. Is your bike level when you're looking? I have to put mine on the center stand to see it well. I also use a little flashlight. I also have to wear my glasses. Yeah, I have a tough time with that too.

I think you're probably right because the window is a darker shade of yellow. I'll have to drain a little out and see if I notice a difference. I rode it around the block a couple times after the change too and I could smell more oil than I could before the change which also tells me that it's probably a little too full.
I do have the bike on the center stand. Who knows how level the ground I have it on is though. I also tried to use a flashlight, but I'm thinking it's a little full and I'll have to drain a little out probably. I don't want to blow any rings because of too high pressure.

Thanks for the comments guys!
