GL1100 Cylinder pressure

Postby moffat » Tue Sep 06, 2011 4:49 am

I have just overhauled my GL1100 engine and as part of the overhaul have had the cylinders relined and am using the standard size pistons with new rings.
The Honda manual states that the pressure in then cylinders should be 171 psi when tested with the throttles wide open. I assume that this pressure is without any gasoline going into the cylinders and is the pressure for air only as with gasoline mixture the pressure is be around the 200 PSI mark?
Thus the only real way to test is to conduct the pressure test before fitting the carburettors? Is this correct???

NO, throttle open..IE carbs on..stop switch turned to off so no spark..and you can drain the carbs or run them dry before you test if you want. but not necessary.
HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
NOW INTO 1500'S..RIDING A 1998 SE

FAIR WINDS,

OK thanks for the help but I am still confused . I rebuilt the whole engine, filled it with oil and turned it over and measured 172 psi pressure at the spark plug hole on each of the 4 cylinders.
I then put the rest of machine together and road tested it, ( it needs the new rings and bearings bedding in for a while yet ), then I checked the cylinder pressure with the same instrument with the throttle wide open and the kill switch off and registerered 200 PSI at the spark plug holes?
My question is why the higher pressure ? I had oil in the bores when conducting the first test without the carbs and naturally there will be oil in the bores on the second test using the carbs wide open obviously passing some gasoline into the cylinders.
Is this gas air mix capable of a different cylinder head pressure of 200psi against 171 psi with just air alone?

The rings are getting seated to the bore (worn to fit).

OK thanks, so ther Honda stated 171 psi is the pressure after the engine has been run in. Great website I am learning a lot from you
