does anyone put larger tires on 1100?

Postby RC4U » Sun Sep 11, 2011 10:49 am

i just bought a '81 interstate that is very nice and always stored inside...well i think the tires look small and i know that it was designed around this...when looking for tires choices are limited for stock and bias...well if i increase to 140 rear and 120 front i can find few more...is this acceptable or is it a no-no?? i have riden since i built my first harley from bolts up chopper...i sold my last bike in 2000 and love this one{for my old age}....and it seems i have to really search for bias ply and many tires are not even labeled radial or bias and have to google them...Jeff

Hopefully others will chime in, I have read of people putting 130's on the back of 1100's, but anything bigger fouls on the drive shaft and other parts. I don't know what can go on the front.. I am sure you are not the first person wanting to do this, so someone with first hand experience will probably give you an answer shortly.

Im NOT sayin it will work ,but my 82 aspy uses 140/90-16 on the rear and 120/90-18 on the front. My rear is a 16" not a 17". 130 to 140 is only 10mm or about 3/8" wider, thats 3/16 each side of center. Look at the space where your tire passes the drive shaft and make your own mind up.If it rubs then its too wide.Usually stock is the way to go but sometimes you need to "redesign" to fit your own needs/wants.

Todd has a good point 140's will probably be too close... 130/90/17 is for the 81...Look at the Avon's, Pirelli's,Dunlops, maybe the Bridgestones.. My next set will be Pirelli's or Avons...

Man its hard to find in stock matching tires in these sizes...so i did order the metzler me880...but the rear is 140/80-17 and i should have enough room as i did measure the distance to shaft housing...and the front is 110/90-19 ...i also ordered conti's in the the milestone and tour..but the rear is not in stock....they did have lazer techs in stock but a little hesitant on those for the weight rating...jeff

The arm to the caliper is what I'd be concerned about, it should clear it but it's gonna be really close...

just got a 83 1100 and it has a 140/90/16 on the rear. it's hitting the driveshaft tube and the bracket from the caliber to the swingarm. not by much but still hitting.

I read this post and then I just went at it and looked up all the matching tires I could find for the 81 GL. and I'm sure there are some more..I did this to save guy's time and it's a pain to find them all but I wanted to help...Look for a post labeled 81 tire choices, should be under the 1100's I think.. anyway there are five different choices there, I'm looking at the bridgestones...

Remember that larger tires are both wider and stick out more from the wheel. On a road bike, odds are high that you can put a slightly larger (say, go from 25mm to 30mm) tire but not a hugely larger tire. If you want to make a big jump you probably also want to get wheels with a wider rim. Note that for off-road tires, the knobs aren't usually counted in the mm size but definitely do affect whether or not the tires fit on your bike.

Have been reading back in time thru TechTalk and came upon this article. I may be able to shed some light on this subject. My recently given `82 standard, (`82 Naked? ), ya it was given to me, has 110/90-19 on the front and 130/90-17 on the rear. The honda factory service manual says that 82`s came with 120/90-18 front and 140/90-16 on the rear. On another but similar point, From 1989 thru 1999, i owned and rode an `83 CB1000 Custom with 120/90-18 and 140/90-16`s on it. The spacing on the rear was close but not tight, that was with Dunlop tires, and availability of tires wasn`t a problem. ( When i changed tires, i went with a ME88 on the rear and a Lazer on the front, and they were the BALLS! and the spacing was the same. Now anybody with time or curiosity can research these two bikes will find the Frame/Suspension`s are VERY similar and part/ number interchangeability might be likely. The 1000C is a 1 year model with a 2-spd sub-transmission making the frames cradle as long or close too the Wing cradle. Will almost guarantee the shaft drive is the same unit as are the airshocks, front fork assy`s with anti-dive unit, and some of the electric stuff. Hope this helps

a friend of mine this winter pus a set of 83 whells on a 81 naked using 140's in the rear after a 100 mile ride on a warm spring day the rear tire was rubbing on the swing arm. We looked over the situation and compared my 82 swing are and found the swing arm on my 82 which I have a Dunlap E3 bias on was in fact wider in the area that the tire had rubbed on the 81. He has since purchased an 82 swing arm and drive shaft to install on the 81. followup after the install is completed.
