Starter chain noise?

Postby wileyrick » Sun Sep 11, 2011 8:16 pm

I have an 83 Goldwing that I bought with a bad starter. Bought rebuilt starter from a notable mechanic. Put the starter on and it works fine. My problem is every time I hit the starter after it has sat for awhile, it makes a sound like the starter chain is loose. After the first bump of the starter, then it starts fine. It spins until it sounds like it catches. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Rick

When mine does this it is usually telling me I am due to change the oil, I dose it with seafoam first (in the oil) ,go for a ride of abaout 50-100 miles. Change oil and filter and that horible noise goes away until time for the next oil change, but thats just my bike. She talks to me, just need to learn how to listen.
Ride safe, Todd

It's not actually the starter chain, it's very likely the sprags in the starter clutch, which get gunked up with sludge and start to drag, causing noise. The best way (apart from disassembly and cleaning) to solve is as mentioned, a good dose of Seafoam in the oil.

Thanks. I will try the Seafoam thing this week. I have read on here that some Seafoam in the gas would clean things up as well.

Yup, I run a can of Seafoam through my gas once in spring and once in the fall, as well as dosing my oil just before the last oil change when I put it away for the winter.
