White Smoke?

Postby wing_newb » Mon Sep 12, 2011 5:24 pm

While I was waiting for a new starter to come in the mail (about 2 or 3 weeks), the bike was sitting. Now I got the new starter in and whenever I start it up, initially there is some white smoke that comes out of the exhaust and it smells like its burning oil. Once it is warm and going (even just a few seconds), the smoke is gone and the oil smell is not so noticeable. Is that rings for sure? Should I be worried?

Are you having to add oil? If it's an insignificant amount of oil being burned, and you aren't needing to add oil (or if you are, not a lot, and not often) then I wouldn't worry that much about it.

My bike burns oil and puffs blue smoke on startup for the first month or so after it comes out of winter storage, or after I don't ride for some time - basically I think it's just complaining about not being ridden. If I ride it regularly, oil consumption drops to near zero, and the smoke goes away.

Hey wingman,
I don't think that it's burning a lot of oil. The frustrating thing is I just can't tell the oil level from the window. I just changed it and added 4 quarts. I couldn't see the level on the window, so I just assumed 4 quarts was the right amount and went with it. Is that the spec on the oil capacity? I've tried spinning the wiper thing, using a flashlight and everything but I just can't see the oil level through that thing. Maybe too much oil in it? The oil level is above the window? That's the only thing I can think of.

I have a dip stick type on mine, I like it..Works great, looks good too..It's probably your valve seals, I think it's common, could be wrong, mine smokes just a little sometimes then again sometimes not at all at start up, I wouldn't worry about it too much, you might smoke too after 30 years or so  really if it clears up it's not that big a deal..

Is the smoke coming out of both silencers equally?Have you left the bike on its side stand or the centre stand? I find that if the bike is left on its side stand then as the left hand cylinders are lubricated by oil squirting upwards onto the bores some residual oil can be left in the combustion chambers of the left hand cylinders which causes smoe smoke at start up after being left a while. Are you sure the smoke is white or is it blue? a sweet smell at the exhaust will indicate coolant in the combustion chamber as the anti freeze causes a sweet smell.

I was going to say, burning oil is usually a blue colored smoke, white smoke usually indicates water in the combustion chamber (usually a failed head gasket, but not always), I would be looking to run a compression test on all 4 cylinders and see what that indicates.

The reason you can't see the level is because you've put too much oil in it - and that's probably a good reason why it's now smoking.

When the engine is dead empty, it takes 3.4 quarts. I find that during an oil change, it's closer to 3 quarts. Try draining about a quart of oil out, then have a look at the little wiper window, and you should be able to see the level.

I am still thinking that the oil level is probably a little high, I'll try draining some more. I always keep it on the center stand to relieve the tires of some weight, so I don't think that the smoke is from the bike being on the side stand. I just fired it up to see the smoke again. It wasn't as dramatic on startup this time. After I started it, I revved up the engine a bit to see. I noticed white smoke coming out of the left side exhaust pipe as I revved it up a bit. Does that help the diagnosis any better? Could that be a head gasket on that side?

If you or anyone else decides to go with a dip stick I think JC Whitney still has them...

on my last oil change i read to check the oil level it is sopposed to be on the center stand, you dont really get an accurate reading on th side stand,so when i got it at just the right level on the center stand,3.4 qts, i put it on tghe side stand and let it settle then made a mark on the case at the sight glass where it was on the side stand,so now i know the level without havin to put it on the center stand. its alittle hard for me as my back is jacked, but when doin an oil change it is definetly on the center stand

Yeh, my last trip from KC. I wanted to check the oil level, I always check it on the center stand, but guess what? Stupid trailer was hooked up still  , so as lazy as I am instead of unhooking it I just put that bike up on the center stand with it hooked to the trailer, Oil was as it was when I left the house..Going down off the stand was kinda weird...It can be done..
