GL1100A sputtering, can you add Heat to get rid of water

Postby millerinar » Sun Sep 18, 2011 12:48 pm

Recently replaced tank and had flushed with vinegar and rinsed with baking soda. Think tank has some water in it. Is it okay to put Heat in the tank?

Yes, when cracking throttle there is a delay and when going down the road will not go over 4K RPM. Had carbs cleaned and rebuilt and sync'd. Shop recommended I replace tank which I did. Cleaned tank with vinegar and washed out with baking soda, thought water out, but problem persists. Have new filter and new fuel pump as well.

One thing I did after I cleaned out my gas tank was I put in a few gallons of gas and I turn off the petcock valve and pulled the hose, then I got a clean five gallon bucket and drained that gas thru and then I repeated this process a few times to rule out water in the tank before I sent fuel to the filter. sure sounds like there are other issues going on, check your plugs, and caps and wires next, look at the coil, sometimes they get cracks on them I hear.. Intakes, are they tight and not leaking air ? Double check the spark plug wires for the correct routeing...Sounds like your not hitting on all four cylinders... Check your timing with a timing light and see if your advance is actually advancing...Lots of stuff to go thru on these bikes, but ruling something out will be worth everything in the long run...Other's will be along to help you out soon too.. :D I'm not that good a mechanic

Dose it with Seafoam(or methyl hydrate),it will absorb the water in the tank drain the float bowls a couple of times and you should be good to go.
Ride safe, Todd

While your at it, check the valve clearances.. Just one more thing to check, and it's easy to check.

Thanks for the advise. Drained front two carbs, fuel looked good. The back two carbs are dry, no fuel at all, will try to blast with air tonite to see if small obstruction and then dose with cleaner. Thanks again for the advise.
