Re: timing chain adjustment
Adjustments for timing belts..no...there not like points.
Proper installation and belt tension....YES.
You can get them off a tooth, set too tight or loose and it will still run...Just not very good.

If you're off a tooth I think you're gonna break things on these engines. Idon't think the clearence is there.

Re: timing chain adjustment
I have just replaced a HYVO primary chain on my 1982 GL1100 amongst a host of other things during the overhaul. The original chain had 25mm ( 1 inch) slack in it yet it was quiet when running? I think the self adjusting spring loaded tensioner was doing a good job. The new chain had virtually little or no slack in it and now the engine is running there is no significant difference in the noise the engine makes. I believe that these early GL1100 engines have several differences around the primary drive area? For example mine does not have the oil thrower plate that goes around the primary driven gear fitted, yet my GL1000 has one and Ihave seen references to it in mainteance manuals yet its not on mine and neither are the bolt holes for one to fit anyway.
