oil seal

Postby 5oakseric » Sun Oct 02, 2011 1:51 pm

I posted about my oil leak on my 81 1100 from around the fuel pump. Supposed to be dry inside there but I'm getting oil out around where it bolts up to the cylinder head. I've looked at the diagram and I may be missing an oil seal. I've removed the pump assy. Can anyone tell me if I should see an oil seal in there? All I've got is that thick black gasket and nothing visible around the shaft that drives the pump and tach. Is the seal internal where I won't see it? Thanks in advance, Eric

I also posted a reply. Now if i'm wrong , please show me how.

Here's what I've found...Not a single print, diagram, parts list or mention ANYWHERE does the cam have a seal on the rear of EITHER camshaft.

AS a precaution,I also checked the mechanics of that.I can't see how a seal could be put on the tac end of the cam in the first place. The worm gear is 0.138" larger than the bearing shaft.

If you drip oil from the black spacer, remove it,clean it and seal it with a SMALL amount of Permatex #2.

I'm looking at a diagram that shows part number 91209-371-003 (an oil seal) near the end of the camshaft. It's hard to tell where exactly it's placement is but when I had he fuel pump off it looked as if a seal would slide onto the shaft, into the cavity around the shaft, and be compressed or at least held in place by the collar portion of the fuel pump housing that slides onto the end of the camshaft. I've not been into this engine. I do know that when I bought the bike the previous owner had just put on a new fuel pump. I figured he just missed putting in the seal. If I'm wrong about all this then what has failed and allowed the oil to come out around the camshaft. Also if that's the case it looks like extensive work to get it apart to fix it. I thank you for your help. Eric

I also see the "machined area" that looks like it would hold a oil seal. However I still ask "how would you pry it over the tac worm gear without damage? It is quite a bit larger.
