83 GL1100 Turn Signals and Brake Lights quit working.

Postby Arcane » Wed Oct 12, 2011 12:11 am

Hey guys. The turn signals and brake lights have quit working on my 83 GL1100. Every other light works (Tail lights, running lights head light etc..), but the Blinkers no longer turn on and the Brake lights no longer light up.

Is this because of the Flasher relay? I wasn't sure if the Flasher relay also worked the brake lights or not. The Turn signal lights did start working again for a while, but the brake lights didn't. Then I parked it and later started it up again and the Turn signals were not working again.

I looked for the flasher relay but could not find it. Any input on the location of it and how to go about getting to it as well as where to buy a new one would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

15 amp fuse.white/green wire.feeds power to flasher, brake switch and horn.Replace the glass fuse and clean and tighten the fuse holder.Glass fuses can fracture,go intermittent and still 'look' good.

Has your horn stopped working as well? It's on the same fuse as the turn signals and brake lights.

Thanks for the response. The Horn Still works.

Where is the fuse located? I will replace it anyway, just to see if it helps.

Thanks.

So I replaced the fuse which looked just fine and nothing changed.

I did notice something else however. When I turn either turn singal on it goes completely out. Such as, the right running light is on, then I turn the right turn signal on then the whole light goes out, no turn signal and no running light.

Any idears? Thanks guys!

This sounds right to me, your flasher relay isnt working. It is located under the false gas tank on the left side. Replace it with a new electronic flasher available at any auto parts store. Spend the extra money on the electronic flasher as oposed to the bimetalic units. The electronic flasher will work with LED lights if you go that route later on to free up some watts for extra driving lights.

Thanks for the input Rogue. I am going to replace the flasher relay in the next couple days. I will post how it works out.

Thanks again.

I'd look under your seat at the connector for the rear lights..the flasher being bad shouldn't effect the brake or taillight.

Whoops missed the brake light being out, if all was working well awhile ago and suddenly it stopped working check your fuses under the upper hatch of your false tank. I just went out to mine and pulled the fuse for the signal/brake,it behaves exactly as you describe. the flasher advise is still good but its not your problem. Replace the glass tube fuse and you should be good to go.You will still need to find out why the fuse blew, as mentioned above under the seat is a good place to start the hunt.

Thanx to RBGERSON for catching my mistake, guess I should slow down my reading a little.

Yah $55 actualy. Good news is, the Flashers now work, the bad news is the Brake lights still don't.

Is there a brake light switch on the foot brake as well as the hand brake? If so, I can rule out the Brake light switch on the Handle bars since I doubt they would both go out at the same time.

I can't see anything wrong with the wiring, fuses or Bulbs though. Electrical problems are such a pain.

I feel your pain, there are very few things more frustrating than an electrical malfunction. Yes there is a switch on each brake. the rear switch has a small spring that hooks to the pedal(easy to see near the driveshaft rubber boot) I have seen them come unhooked before. the frontswitch has two wires that just plug in at the bottom front of the master cyl housing .

If you aproach electric issues from a logical progression ,ie. systematically, It is quite predictical.
Ask youself these questions and don't go farther till you have the answers.
1: Do I have B+ supplied at the switch ?
If yes, is it going throught the switch,
is it getting to the light socket?
It is a good practice to use the light socket base for grounding the test leads. And then use the battery neg. to confirm a good ground if you don't have power.
If there is no power supplied to the switch, using a wiring schematic go backwards from the switch till you find the source of the issue, or reach the battery .

I hope I am being clear, it is sometimes easier to just DO rather than try and expain.

Thanks for the input guys, I have ordered new switches for the hand and foot brake just so I can rule them out as the cause.

Funny thing is, both brake switches Together cost HALF what that flasher relay did. Then again, I bought them at a different place.

Anyways, I will replace those, then go from there.

Thanks again.

I have recieved a couple of PMs asking for info on what type of flasher I used so here is a pic of it

It is a "Tridon" brand Electrionic flasher, on my 82 it only needs 2 wiring contacts,if you have an 83 you may need the 3 wire model. The unit I have installed on my bike is half the length of this one and has been working flawlessly for 3 years now with LED lights all around. 8-)

Here the new flasher I used for my '82 GL1100 I. Cost was $12.95 at Advanced Auto. Others may not have the option to use this one because as I have explained in the following thread, my 82 has the fuse box layout of an 83... viewtopic.php?f=4&t=11160
I had to connect the ground to this flasher in order for it to work. But I am happy that it did. Now I can put LED's in and no worries.

How are you going to get that square peg to fit in the round hole where the flasher mounts  Glad you got it figured out, bet the internals of the one you used are the same as mine ,just a different shape case. 8-)

I put the same square-type electronic flasher on my 1100. No problem with it fitting in - it's held on with a rubber strap, so it easily conforms to a square shape. :)

The white/green wire mentioned earlier also runs to the starter button along with 5 or 6 other wires from the red connector in the headlight bucket. remove and disassemble the switch, clean and lube with di-electric grease and re assemble. that was the fix for the same problem i had on my `82 naked. That same W/Gr wire also runs thru the main harness to a point near the flasher relay. inside the harness it changes color to BLACK, one of the wires that goes to the flasher. That black wire is HOT. be careful where you connect it to the flasher. Speaking from experience. But the start button maintenance solved the no horn, brake, tail light problem i WAS having. Hope this helps. Also, i bought a TRIDON - EL12 mechanical flasher for 15.00 from Advance Auto.
