Need help Replacing timing belts 1983 GL1100 Aspencade

Postby gemairpilot » Sun Oct 16, 2011 12:03 pm

I want to replace the timing belts on my 1983 GL1100 Aspencade. I cannot find a video or pictures or a detailed point by point instructions. I have read the engine does not have to be removed. The manual always says to remove the engine to do anything, very confusing. As noted I had my starter off in about 1/2 hr after reading a member post. The book says remove engine. I don't trust the manual anymore. Help is appreciated. Gerry

Gerry Look at this site http://www.goldwingfacts.com/forums/forum1/ right at the top of the page in yellow is a video of how to change timing belts. Its for a 1200 but should give you what you need basically the same. Hal

Thanks Hal. I watched that Video. Didn't know if the GL1100 is the same. Lots of good information but I can't figure out why he had to remove the seat and parts of the rear bags. Seemed to take half the bike apart to change the belts. I'll watch it again and check against the manual. Gerry

Gerry I changed my belts on my 84 aspy 1200 I had to take the radiator off, makes it easy to get to the belts ,You do need to take seat off and the false tank as you will need to get to the T-1 inspection hole located on top of the engine left side. Some guys dont take the radiator off but it is easier to work on the belts. Hal

Thanks Hal ! It makes sense now> Somneone should write the book "HONDA REPAIRS FOR DUMMIES" HA HA Especially for me. I am mechanical by trade and not afraid to do maintenance on anything. Sometimes I need some help to make it easier. This forum has helped me considerably. thanks to everyone who replied. Cheers, Gerry :D

I've learned in year that I've had my wing that for every job, the manual says "Remove engine". In reality, every job should start with, remove the seat and lower fairings, optional to remove the false tank.

I've learned that if you want to change the light bulb in the tail lamp, you will probably have to remove the seat. (Just kidding of course)

Here is another for the gl1000. It will be identical for the gl1100.

Well here I am again with more questions about replacing timing belts. the engine is out of the bike sitting on the floor propped up. I put in the new starter and will write something about that later. I followed the link to NAKED GOLDWINGS and printed the instructions for replacing the belts. I replaced rollers and springs at the same time. the left belt went on and tensioned ok. The right belt went on as described but went slack again when the camshaft rolled back. I followed the instructions and rotated the crankshaft 360 degrees to tension the right belt as suggested. PROBLEM is that it feels like the valve is hitting the piston and stopping crankshaft from turning any more. I have the plugs out and piston set to top dead centre on the #3 cylinder on compression. Have I missed something ??? Will report tomorrow.

Its very easy for the crankshaft to move particularly when you are putting the right hand belt on. I replace the sparking plugs when I had the timing mark lined up and thus the compression in the cylinnders helps keep the crank in place. Always check the timing marks after the belts are on , remove the sparking plugs and turn the engine by HAND. Resist using the starter motor until you are certain that then valves are not touching the pistons. I did mine with the engine in frame but with radiator loosened off and moved forward to facillitate the cam cover bolts ( three one length and 1 longer) replacement.

I f you didn't mark the main crank before you started and kept it in place.you may have an issue..you should start over..take belts off..make sure the crank is in the right position cylinder 1 TDC on compression stroke..mark crank and follow the steps on the NGW site.

Thanks for the help. I had the #1 piston TDC (not #3 as I had said before) marked the crank position. I am going to remove belts as suggested and start over. I have printed the instructions from NGW site and also from the Goldwing site. I must have missed something so will start over and let you all know how it turns out, It will be Positive I know. Have you tried searching Youtube for videos? Some people make videos while they make repairs on their bikes. I've searched Youtube while working on my cars and bikes. Sometimes it helps to see someone do it to understand it. Just a thought.

Thanks SeeBee, I have seen several videos but just can't get it timed. Reviewed all the printed info I got to see what I should be doing, but no dice. The engine was out so I have taken it to my local Honda dealer to have the work done along with some other maintenance I need. Hope to have it back in a week. Had a good chat with the mechanic who has lots of experience with the GL1100 engine. I will see him next week again. Thanks again to everyone for the help. Incidentaly I phoned the company I bought the starter from and they refunded my $30 (I live in Canada, it did cost $26) shipping because of the wrong "O" ring being installed and also the faulty gear. Good guys to deal with. See you all later. Gerry

Thanks to everyone who gave me hints and websites to check out. I got the engine back from the shop and have it in the bike.Have most everything ready to go, radiator in, hoses hooked up.Just waitng for some "O" rings to finish up. I USED A HAIR DRIER WHEN ATTACHING SOME OF THE PLASTIC HOSES TO MAKE THEM NICE AND SOFT, EASIER TO GET THEM ON. Should have the bike ready to go in another week or so and then FLORIDA HERE I COME. Cheers from WINTERPEG [/u] Manitoba.
