82 interstate false tank

Postby evesdropper » Wed Oct 19, 2011 9:43 pm

Does anyone know how to take the false tank apart? I have to swap the front door so I can install the on board compressor system.
I have the tank off the bike and door unbolted but can not remove it from the rest of the tank.

I removed and replaced the tank door once...but I remember it was difficult to figure out, and very difficult to get it back together. Unfortunately I can't remember exactly how it came apart - I just remember that it was not at all intuitive when reassembling (particularly the spring/hinge) it and took me quite some time figuring it out - so I'd highly recommend taking some pictures of it assembled as well as during disassembly, so that you can reference them when putting it back together.

Sorry I can't be of much more help than that!

It is difficult to get the top cover off---take your time so you don't scratch things up.
Take pictures before you do it.
I COULD ONLY DO IT AFTER I TOOK THE "RUBBER RING" OFF FIRST ALL THE WAY AROUND. AND YOU ONLY INSTALL IT BACK AFTER GETTING THE COVERS ON.

Thanks for the tip. I will try removing the rubber seal this week.
