Timing Check....Wow

Postby littlebeaver » Wed Nov 09, 2011 12:31 am

Well guy's this blew me away...I enjoy checking stuff on my bike, especially because I make a lot of long trips, well I changed my oil and put in a new filter, I always check my timing when I do an oil change because the oil is nice and clean, Guy's it was so clean looking in through my site cap I made that it was as if I was looking into a glass of water, that clear, I could see the f-1 mark so clear it blew me away...Now this is the kicker, as I changed the clip on timing thingy to the #4 carb off from #2 I could actually see the color of the oil change, Wow   :o it blew me away.. it got darker Wow, I could still see my marks but not like before, now it was like I was looking thru tented glass but I could still see the f-2 mark with no problem, I was just amazed the oil changed colors that quickly, I may do that Seafoam thing in the engine now,,When I check the oil at the dip stick it's clean clean clean looking still but a little darker, very light color still... Just a tip on if anyone checks it with the site cap...Do it quickly...  Oh yeh, how much Seafoam do I add I forgot?

The oil may not have gotten darker, there may just have been more of it to look through?

Well, I don't have your sightglass, but it really surprised me how clean the oil is on the dipstick on my 82. I changed it & added 1/2 pint of MMO when I did my timing belts, but I couldn't run it to get it hot before draining it as I had no tags for bike at the time. It did drain for almost 2 days before being refilled tho. I have about 250 miles on it and it's barely beginning to show any color.

If you have an 82, then you have a sightglass.

Look at steps 30 and 31 on How to change your engine oil, it has pictures that show you where it is.

Yes, new82 please don't get the oil siteglass confused with my timing site cap .... it's just a lense I made to view the crank to see the marks on the crank, the oil site glass is on the lower right side of the engine...

Thanks - I found it - hidden behind side chrome splash plate. I also have after market dipstick on my bike. I thought the timing glass was what you were viewing your oil through beaver. Of course that would only be splashed oil i think.

Yeh, I was looking in at the crank site hole on top of the engine, I really like my dip stick to check the oil, mine oil site glass was cracked and leaking so I used JB Weld to seal it off just after I got the bike about 5 years ago still holding strong......
