Oil Pump Seal

Postby chase199c » Wed Nov 30, 2011 8:27 pm

I could use some help changing an oil seal, that's leaking out the weep hole. Does anyone have any diagrams or manuals they could send in a PDF?

Have a look at How to change your water pump - the entire process is detailed in there.

How do you know it's an oil pump seal? Is the only symptom oil leaking from the weep hole? If so, then it's more likely a water pump/water pump seal than an oil pump seal.

Yes the only thing I can think of is that the seal is dry rotted. There is no oil in the coolant. So I don't think it's a water pump problem. So why it's coming out the weep hole I don't know. I do know however honda make's a water pump rebuild kit. I was told you could go through the front of the motor behind the water pump, so the only I can think is the inner seal is bad. But I don't understand why it's coming out the weep hole?

If the seal is leaking usually due to bad pump, take lower elbow of the front of the water pump( all water will run out) housing reach in and try to wiggle the impeller...if..the shaft wiggles the pump is bad and it will let oil through the seal. Honda does not make a rebuild kit for the pump. But it can be rebuilt..a guy in Holland sells a complete kit for rebuild was $25 plus shipping last year or you can buy the bearings and mechanical seal needed yourself..from parts houses. Oil can also leak aroiudnt he crush washers or the o ring at the back of the pump.

Complete instructions for rebuild on the NGW site.

The design is that the weep hole allows the oil (or coolant, depending on which seal has failed) to leak out of the bike, instead of contaminating the coolant (or oil, if it's the coolant leaking). I've heard more than once of people who have found contaminated coolant due to a failed water pump seal (usually the way it happens), and when they examine the weep hole, it has been plugged with epoxy (or a wood screw! Not joking!) by a clueless previous owner who just "saw a leak and plugged it."
