new to gwd and got an 81 gl 1100

my 81 gl 1000 has a loud tapping at idle but smooths out at around 2000 rpm and no more tapping.
can anyone derict me were to start someone said it needed vavle adjustment would that cause this problem.
runs fine outherwise

Valve adjustment is probably a good idea along with syncing the carbs. I usually check the valves when i do an oil change just to make sure they are still adjusted correctly.

I'd start with valves. They're easy to adjust, and can be done in an hour or less. Have a read through here: How to adjust your valve clearances

After that, I'd do a carb sync (see How to synchronize your carburetors).

Take the extra time to make sure the gap is correct, it's my opinion that this is one time it doesn't hurt to be a profectionist when adjusting them...Oh and by the way the 81's are the best...ahhh :lol: And welcome to the site...

thanks for the fast responces i will do just that.
a bit afeered of carb syncing but used to be a machanic/machinest for big cranes so can probly handle it with the info on this sight
