GL1100 fairing key replacement

Postby t-bar12 » Tue Jan 10, 2012 7:38 am

I just installed a front fairing on my GL1100. There is a pocket on the right-hand side with a locking top - and I need to get a key for it. I know that the key number is 312 (from the person who sold me the fairing). Can someone direct me to where I can get a replacement key - to be able to lock the fairing pocket? Thanks in advance . . . Tom

I believe the "312" is just the blank number.

No, the 3-digit number on the key is the code for how the key is cut. A locksmith should be able to cut a key knowing that number.

So, I should be able to take the 3-digit number (along with the top of the fairing pocket - which has the lock on it) to a locksmith to cut? If you confirm that, I'll give it a go - and see if it works.

Let me know how well that works for you , ok?
cause I have some keys for my tool boxes , all with the same number on them, and they are all cut different.

I had the same issue with the radio on my 83 GL1100 Interstate, no key for the face place. The ignition key would go into the lock OK but wouldn't turn. I removed the radio's lock cylinder & took it to a locksmith, he was able to modify the lock so it worked with my key.

Take along your ignition key as well, so he knows the key blank type it needs.

If you have the lock out where the locksmith can get to the insides, s/he can set the tumblers to match your ignition key. Then you only need one key.

Moving the wafers around inside the lock barrel is a piece of cake for a decent locksmith.

If it's a Honda fairing, there should a key code number on the lock itself. If it's a Vetter fairing there is some lock info here: http://craigvetter.com/pages/Vetter_Fai ... tions.html
