Secondary starter????

Postby darklancer » Sun Jan 15, 2012 7:46 am

I have a GL1100 and it wont start, it wont even turn over!! Ive been in contact with the guy who did work on her for the last owner (who unfortunately has died) who told me that the problem is probably the "secondary starter" and I need to "clean up the ball bearings under the 4 inch aluminum cap because they are probably jammed as the bike hasnt been started for a while". Ive looked right through the workshop manual and found NOTHING relating to a "secondary starter" but I was also told that this isnt the right name for it but he cant remember what its actually called. From what I managed to glean it attaches to the starter system, rotates only one way and has 3 or 4 little springs inside it.
I need to know what he is actually referring to so that I can get my bike sorted and on the road, Can anyone help me with this please??

He is/was probably referring to the starter clutch which has rollers that gunk up when oil isn't changed frequently or the wrong oil is in the bike, which could make the bike hard to start. There are several posts on this subject here on the site; but before you get into that, explain what is going on in a little more depth. Does the starter "spin", "click" or make any determinable noise at all? have you made sure that your battery is fully charged, all connections clean and tight? Give us a little more detail and we'll help you narrow down your issue.

The starter turns but doesnt do anything else! This is starting to sound very much like the starter clutch isnt it....
Once the tank and carbs are cleaned and we have decent fuel and a new battery I shall try a method of thinning down the oil and running her gently for a while before draining completely and seeing if that has resolved the problem.
If that doesnt work will I need to drop the engine to work on the starter clutch or can it be worked on without the need to go to this expanse of work?
Many Thanx

Getting to the sprage clutch does involve the removal of the engine. I had a similar experience as yours and it turned out to be the stater itself. Search the posts for starter issues and you will find some have resolved their starter issue by adding Seafoam to the engine oil and running the bike at moderate speed for a few hundred miles. After this the oil and filter were replaced and the stater problem would be resolved. It's worth a try before tearing into the engine.

It does sound like the starter or sprag clutch. Sometimes it can be freed up by putting the bike into top gear and then pushing the bike backwards. The engine turning backwards does not harm the engine but causes the starter clutch to become engaged and the shock of it being suddenly engaged can often free it up. It's certainly worth trying before you take the engine out..

Maybe you could confirm if the starter will turn or not by using a jumper cable from the starter to the battery , just make sure it's in neutral, hook the red jumper cable to the starter stud and with the other touch the positive on the battery, starter should spin, if it does, you have a bad electrial connection, probably at the starter relay -solenoid.. if it doesn't it's probably the starter clutch ..

GREAT NEWS!!!!! The Starter clutch is FREE and CLEAR and working! All it needed was to be put into gear and pushed in reverse and it freed up! She fired up and away she went, a bit rough but thats no problem!
My heartfelt thanx to all who supplied the ideas to free it up and much appreciation to littlebeaver for the test to confirm and thrasherg for the solution which worked! I actually went to the mechanic with a list of 8 options to free it and he hit it first time with the first option.
A great forum gentlemen, I am VERY grate :D :D ful.

Good news. I'd probably think about running some Seafoam in the engine for a short while now, then do a full engine oil change to remove some of the sludge from in and around the sprag clutch.
