Grinding gears on 81 Goldwing

Post by carljaydyer » Thu Feb 02, 2012 9:26 pm

I have an 81 GL that runs great. It doesn’t shift smoothly. I have to be very cautious when shifting and even then it slightly grinds before going into gear. I turned the nut where the cable and the clutch arm meet. It helped but didn’t completely fix it. There may be more room to turn the nut but not sure if I am doing the correct thing. Any suggestions? What is the best way to adjust the clutch?

Not sure what you meant..but you should first adjust the clutch at the clutch lever on the handle bar..should be about 1/4" of play before you feel pressure..look at the where the clutch lever meets the clutch perch..1/4" "V' shaped gap or 1/2" at the lever end. and then you should feel the clutch pull. ALWAYS pull the lever flush to the grip when shifting.

The adjustment at the clutch cover is trickier..loosen lock nut, back it off then turn adjust screw in until you feel pressure and then back out until there is 5/8" free play on the clutch arm lever..lock the nut adjust the rest at the handlebar.
