Dates on timimg belts?

Postby 86GW1200 » Thu Feb 23, 2012 7:01 pm

How can you tell the dates (age) of Honda timing belts? I pulled mine off for regular maintenance. I have a set from a "member" online and they look exactly like the 20 y.o. ones I just pulled off. I am NOT accusing him of anything 'cause I don't have the info yet. Any help? I don't want to take off old belts just to put on old belts. Thanks

Like he said, you can't. There aren't date codes, and the timing belts don't wear visibly, so you can't tell how old/used they are. For the price of belts at NAPA, you're best off getting a set of new ones and going with that known quantity, than risking your engine to some unknown belts.

Here is the info I have on timing belts.
Also a used belt should have been marked as to it's direction of rotation.

NAPA – 250070
Gates – 5043 or T070 (avaiable thru most NAPA & Carquest stores)
Goodyear – 40272 could be 40070
Enjoy the ride. They are all good, just some better than others.

Thanks - I'll try to check that out.

Is it possible the Honda belts I just bought are really new when they are labelled exactly like the 20 year old ones?

Ya it's possible. Don't over think this, just replace them.

I'm not aware of anyway to tell the date. Ask the guy you bought them from when he purchesed them? When I bought my 86 with 20k 2 1/2 years ago it had the orginal belts. I changed them just due to age and not knowing the real prior history. Now I have 52k and it will be time to change agin before to long. There is no set time or mileage for that change. I figure 50k is good.
Enjoy the ride. They are all good, just some better than others.

Or from HERE, in Canada for about $15 :

http://www.hsaautoparts.ca/searchitem.epc

(plus shipping )
But the above is correct : When I replaced mine at about 60,000, I took a careful look at the old and the new ... ABSOLUTELY no visible difference !!! That area stays pretty clean, if your engine is sealed properly ... and the " old " ones were just as clean as the new ....
..... An engineering friend felt that you could ( probably ) leave them in for 300,000 or more, since the technology of belts has improved so drastically.

BUT ...since its an interference fit engine ... I think you should replace them just for your own " Peace of Mind "

or.... dream ( nightmare ) about exactly what will happen, as you shift from 5th to 4th , on an aggressive curve... and when the belt breaks, and a piston, or two are trying to occupy the same space as a valve
... ugh !!!

Has anyone encountered a broken belt on a Goldwing?

Yes! On my 76. Left side broke. Engine quit. Had it towed home. Rebuilt head. 2 valves bent but luckily no piston damage. I had just inspected them and they "looked" like new. Don't take a chance. You can do some serious damage if a belt breaks.

Found some half hour away. The guy says they list for 3 or 4 Honda engines as well - which is why they were in stock. I'll be picking them up tomorrow. 13 bucks a piece.

Just bought two genuine from the local Honda dealer for $97 each. With exchange rate, that's about US$100 each. Life sure is tough down here. Ya hafta loveya Honda.......

Why even consider a used belt from a friend? If you are gonna tear it down to look, spend 30 bucks or less for Gates belts and replace them. Sometimes I think there should be an intelligence test before you are allowed to by a 25 yo bike.
