Have a look at How to add a trunk rack to your bike

You can see how I used a piece of ABS pipe to reinforce the trunk lid - same thing should work for your problem.

I did this reinforcement on my 1100 as well as my 1500, and it works great.

My trunk started to crack in several places, after an extensive trip to Alaska .
( Road vibrations, and trunk a little too overloaded ... cracks spreading from the mounting holes on the lower half )

I wanted to have any repairs look as if they " belonged "

In my nearest "Industrial " area , there is a plastics shop, and they have , on staff, a plastic welding guy.
He " filled " the cracks with the welding plastic, and cut and welded a new " Floor " to the trunk out of slightly thicker plastic plate .

I re-installed it with slightly longer bolts, and 1" fender washers to distribute the stress a little better...

Looks the same as new, inside and out and works better than new !!

I've seen a few repaired with fibreglass, but it eventually parted company with the plastic. It just fell off.
