1st Wing

Postby Asphalt guy » Mon Apr 16, 2012 8:10 am

I just picked up a 1984 Aspencade 1200. She's got all the bells and whistles, and rides great. I think she needs a tune up, brake pads, oil change, and air filter. I think she might be running rich, I smell gas down by the engine when I turn it off ( I do turn the fuel off ) I this normal? It's also very cold blooded, again, is this normal? At 1,600 I don't think it was a bad deal. What do you guys think?

Welcome and congrats on the new ride.
If the bike has been sitting for any length of time, I'd change the oil and filter, brake fluid, fork oil and of course the timing belts ( unless you know for sure they are fairly new ) Check the brake pads to see if they need to be replaced and I'd also check the tires for age, cracks or any other signs of wear that could cause you issues on the road. Go through all of your lights to make sure everything functions as it should.
Now as for the gas smell .. NO, that should be the FIRST thing you do, make sure it's not leaking onto a hot engine.

Tires still have nipples on them! Check. No gas leaking that I can see. The front brake is a bit spongey, so I assume it needs pads, or just fluid. The rear needs pads for sure, its squeking. One of the aftermarket light bars is not working, more than likely, a fuse or wiring issue. Timing bets, and stator have been replaced. I don't think the fork oil is an issue, I'd change the final drive oil 1st. The air ride works , and suspension is plush. I also need a right side cover, if anyone has a matching one, I'd buy it. How did I do on the price?

I just went out and fired her up. The guy had it warm when I bought it yesterday. So, I found out she smokes a bit until its warm. Normal or not? And, I turned on the aux. lights ....they all are working today lol.

Pretty common, particularly if it was sitting on the side stand. As long as the smoke disappears fairly quickly after it warms up, it's normally just valve guides, and unless it bothers you greatly, you can just live with it.

Asphaltguy.....thinking you got a great deal. $1600 for all of it is a steal in my opinion. I paid $1500 for my '84 interstate a couple years ago, from my neighbor, and I know he spent over $3000 over a two year period on repairs and maintenance.
Mine also smokes for half a minute on initial start-up. I usually leaves mine on the sidestand....never gotten the hang of centerstand.
Seems a common problem is the rear brake caliper. Tends to get stiff and hangs a little. I cleaned out mine (crud and rust), and it worked better for a while. Need to do it again.
Another issue , especially on the '84 (first GL1200 year), was the starter. Would often crank very slow when warm, almost like battery was dead. Not sure if yours have this issue. My starter had recently been proffessionally rebuilt, but still had this problem. I replaced the "wal-mart" battery with a top-of-the-line Yusama(?) battery, and it helped a lot. You might also consider using a fuel conditioner regularly....depending on how often you ride. It would help keep the carb jets clean.

Thanks for the info Zamboni. I think the original owner put every chrome piece he could find on this thing, except for the motor covers, which I don't want because of the heat they hold in. I didn't know they were supposed to be stored on the center stand. Thanks! I'm going to put a few more miles on her, to run the old gas out, and get some "gunk" loosened up and change the oil. Mine starts at the touch of the button, hot, or cold. The connector by the batttery has already been removed, and wired direct. Then its on to the brakes. Thanks again.

I'm looking for both side covers for the bike. Anyone have some laying around that is a color match for this bike?

You got a good deal on it. Especially since the belt and stator have already been done. Run some Seafom through the tank to help clean out the carbs. Spongy brake means it needs to be flushed and bled. Look at the pads to see if they need to be replaced.
