NO TIMING MARK

Postby rono24 » Wed May 02, 2012 2:41 pm

IMARKING HAVE BEEN A MECHANIC ALL MY LIFE EVEN ASE CERTIFIED AND PUTTING TIMING BELTS AND PULSE GENERATORS ON MY 1200 SHOULD BE EASY. FIRST THING IS THEY DID NOT PUT A TIMING MARK ON THE CRANKSHAFT PULLY SO I REVERT TO WHAT I KNOW BRING NUMBER ONE CYLINDER UP TO TDC AND SET THE CAMS ON THEIR MARKS AND YOU ARE SET TO GO. THEN THE RIHT SIDE CAM KEEPS TURNING SO I HAVE TO INOVATIVE TO SET IT. I PUT IT ALL BACK TOGETHER AND THE RIGHT SIDE IS WEAK THE BIKE STARTS FINE REVS FINE BUT RIGHT SIDE HAS LOW VACCUM. IDLE IS ROUGH BUT REVS EASY AND STARTS EASY. I NEED TO DO A COMPRESSION CHECK TO SEE IF MAYBE I BUMPED A VALE WHEN SETTING THE TIMING

Timing is found under the "site plug".It's found just behind the carbs, almost near the center of the block. It's a large(1-1/4") flat head cap.
If the timing is off even one tooth,as you know, the scavenge cycle will be off for those cylinders. It will still run, just not great.3 teeth off and you bend a valve.
The cam marks are on each side and will line up near dead perfect every time.
Get the tension right.Don't rely on the 25 year old spring to set it.Test everything for tension and marks twice by hand turning before starting the engine.
There is a "How-To-Article" on timing belts.gl1100-gl1200 are the same.

IT WAS 2 TEETH OFF ON ONE SIDE AND 1 TOOTH OFF ON THE OTHER. ALSO IT IS A PLUG THAT UNSCREWS RIGHT BEHIND THE CARBS THAT IS WHERE THE TIMIN G MARK IS. I CAN DO THIS JOB IN LESS THAN 4 HOURS NOW WITHOUT ANY POWER TOOLS.
