Regulator Question

Postby Bob2b2 » Thu May 03, 2012 8:59 pm

Howdy,,, I picked up a new regulator for my 86 Aspencade,it was said to fit this model, but after getting it I have noticed it does not have the black wire on it (I understand now this is a senceing wire for the state of battery charge) will the regulator work or do I need to get a different one? Thanks , Bob

DO NOT PLUG IT IN.If it's not exactly right,it may cause bad things to happen.
Remember.there are two red wires direct from the battery 30 amp fuse on that plug.
Post a picture of it and any numbers it has on it.
You are right, the OEM unit has a black ignition sense wire that is needed.
If I remember,there are 3 yellow,2 red,2 green and one black.
How many wires does yours have?
Is the plug exactly the same and if so,what wire on the unit would hook to the black wire and the rest of them as well.
If I can identify it,I research to see if it meets the specs and suitability for the Wing.

I was just thinking..The Gl1000 unit had a separate regulator from the rectifier.
It is identified by the lack of that black wire.It has 7 wires on it and the regulator module has 3.
Later models combined the regulator into the rectifier housing and added the 8th wire, the black sense wire.

Thanks for the replies, you guys are correct it is the wrong regulator it only has 7 wires and I need 8. a lot of heat at the 8 wire connector to the regulator made me suspect it. But after seeing it would not fit I decided to check to yellow wires at the stator (I had not check them cause they were soldered together very well) so I cut the wires and checked continuity, all wires showed continuity to ground and I checked the ac amp output of the wires and it only showed 30 amps at 3000 rpm on all of them, so it looks like tear down and new stator time. Is there some stators and rectifiers that are better than others that you would recomend to use? Thanks Bob
