Decal Removal

Post by mormoney » Fri May 04, 2012 6:48 pm

I have a 1986 Goldwing Aspencade with some of the decals deteriorating that I need to replace. Does anyone know how these decals can be removed without hurting the underlying paint?

Decals ( and some painted additions ) can often be removed with " Easy-Off"
A gentle spray application of the mildest Easy-Off , on a small towel
and a few minutes wait will loosen the top layer, and a gentle towel rub will remove some of it.
Rinse, dry, repeat ..... and again, as needed ...

I had a painting on one side, and decals on the back of the top box... it took 5 applications , as I did not want to damage any other parts of the bike.

Easy off will not work on any pin striping that is a taped type of compound... but does dissolve painted -on pin striping ... again... but slowly.

I believe the factory installed decals and pinstriping are applied over the base coat paint, then clear-coat is sprayed over them, so removing them will require sanding, etc and obviously a repaint.
