new water pump leaks.

Postby sparkyman » Sun May 06, 2012 9:28 pm

Hello everyone well if any of you can help me I have been working on a 84 aspencadefor some time now. I pulled the engine and replaced the stator timing belts clutch and water pump. I started the bike for the first time just a few hours ago and she was leaking antifreeze from the weep hole just a little but quit when I shut it down.I also had a little oil leak beforei filled it with antifreeze from the weep hole.I used an OEM pump and changed all o rings and the seal on the front of the oil pump just wondering if it might seal up if I ride it a little please help thanks.

Generally speaking.If it leaks...it leaks...and wishing won't stop it.Sorry.
O rings won't seal themselves up.Either they are mis-aligned or defective (deformed,too small,etc).
Water pump seals are difficult to seat properly, the wrong assembly angle or a O ring that is just difficult can roll and mis-align.

Maybe....just maybe the ceramic self centering seal just seated. It also seals the coolant from the bearing.Keep your fingers crossed.

You could have damaged one of the o rings on install, easy done, Use vegetable shortening (lard) to lube the O rings on install.

The O-rings on the water pump are VERY sensitive to being rolled when installed, and need some lubrication (vaseline works) to help them slide in place without rolling. Tolerances are tight, so if one of them rolls a bit, it can (i.e. will) cause a leak.

If it's just a very small leak (a drop or two now and then) it's possible that it will seal up with a few heat cycles. But if it's any more than that, you likely need to pull it out and re-seat the O-rings. I ended up having to do exactly that on my 1100 for the same reason.
