Preventing Hydro Lock...Petcock rebuild kit ??

Postby SilverDave » Tue May 08, 2012 11:52 am

On a GL1200, can one get a " rebuild " kit for the fuel shutoff petcock ? Who sells them ?

I think that valve is supposed to be, when new , a vacuum lock type, not allowing any fuel through unless there is an engine vacuum.

..... and sadly, I feel mine is letting fuel through, when parked,
...... filling up the cylinders... diluting the oil... annoying the machines owner...

Alternatively, Could one install, somewhere, between the ( possibly faulty) petcock and the fuel filter one of these :

Has anyone actually installed a similar 12 volt electric shut off valve on a GL1200 ?

Where would you place it ?

What 12 volt fuse would you use ?

( I think acc might not be a good idea ... if your lights caused a fuse to blow, you could not go anywhere...

I see no reason why you couldn't use something exactly like that, and wiring to the ACC would be fine (for exactly the reason you list).

As for the physical location, the only place I could think of you WOULDN'T want it is where there is too much heat.

I also use that one to replace my leaking $160 vacuum valve on my gl1500.

Ok... My internet search shows that the "original" GL1200 petcock has been replaced by OEM # 16950-MG9005
and does not have any rebuild kits available for it .... :(

and it looks to me as if it is NOT vacuum operated,

so... replacing it would not actually help the " Hydro-lock"

Its clearly is sand or dirt in one of the jets or needle valves in the carbs .... Heavy sigh ...

Might a can or two of SeaFoam help this at all ??
