85 gl1200 running problems

Postby Poohman » Thu May 24, 2012 8:47 pm

Ok Here is my problem and what I has been done so far: 85 gl1200

The Bike has a small exhaust leak at connection from header pipe to baffle. The wing will not go over 50 mph. It does backfire when trying to excellarate after 4th gear.

Took it to a bike shop and the put new coils, carb needles and jets. changed oil, then they told me it would be 532.00 for 4 new slide diaphrams. I said no I would do them myself. Bought new ones and put them one, Thanks to randakk.

What in the Heek is wrong with this bike. I am at my witt's ends and want to at least get it running good.

Thanks for all the help.

First question....Does it backfire into the intake or a loud noise from the exhaust.?
This can identify if it's running lean or rich.
Did the backfiring exist before any repairs were done.?
Or was this a new problem.

It sounds like both really. The main part sounds like the intake, but I am not sure. Well it wasnt a problem until the bike shop worked on it.

Check if the plug wires are connected in correct firing order.

Be sure and check those vacuum lines also.
Enjoy the ride. They are all good, just some better than others.

Does this year bike have the bad stator plug/electrical issues? This certainly could effect performance.
