1984 gl1200 interstate lighting issues

Postby bobberwing » Sun Jun 03, 2012 11:40 pm

I recently bought an 84 gl1200 interstate. My problem is no lights are working at all niether is the tach or horn. The bike runs ok and battery is charging. Where do i need to start looking? I'm not much on electrics so any advice would be helpfull.

My first suggestion is to buy a test light(probe) then download the schematic or service manual.
Locate the fuses and probe each side looking for volts.

I have a multimeter and have ordered a Haynes sevice manual. I will download the schematic and get to work on it. Thanks.

I've got the same bike and I'm gonna be pulling all the plastic for painting. If you get stuck post or pm and I can compare bikes and wires if you need

Thanks man. I was checking fuse box with multimeter and only getting reading from one of the acc sides when I noticed that the box could be disconnected. I began to wiggle it to get it loose and the instument panel lights came on. (I had the key on at the time) I couldn't seem to get it unplugged and didn't want to pull too hard. Probably has never been unplugged. Anyway if I put some pressure on it everthing stayed on, if I let go lights would sometime go out. If I get it unplugged and clean it I think will be ok but it seems stuck. Any suggestions?

The plugs usually have a piece you have to push on to release it and if one connection is corroded or arced out it can be a bear to separate them.I've seen plugs melted together from a arcing connection.

Actually what you describe happened on mine too.
I lost the lighting in the faring.Mine has a plug below the left pocket. There are a bunch of wires there. If I moved the plug,it would go on and off.
I removed it and scraped and cleaned every connector.
I found 2 of them so badly corroded that they could not be fixed.
I removed the wires from the big connector and replaced it with a new connector.
I just ran the wires next to the original plug.
The connector was not fixable but the other 8 or so pins seemed OK.

I know the plug your talking about on the left. I'm making a bobber type bike out of mine and have taken most everything off it. I never realized how much wiring there could be on a bike. I'm trying to be carefull so as not to mess anything up but I tell you this is the most fun I've had in a while and am learning a lot.

I've found my share of bad or burnt connections.
Usually it will harden the casing and discolor it besides oxidizing the copper.
It's tough to clean and solder it back together but worth the effort.
I usually look about 2 inches back from the connector to ID the color code.
At least they keep them going color to color.
I've never seen a green plugged into a red but I did see a light green plugged into a dark green.
That circuit didn't work after that.
Holler if you need help, and take some before, during and after pictures.
I've thought of bobbing my 1200 too. It's my spare bike.

Thanks for the info. As soon as I get the service manual I ordered I can tell more about what I'm doing. The main thing is I'm learning a lot and having fun with it. This bike had been setting for a couple of years but started regularly. Runs and idles good but does have a few issues. Front fork seal leak on one side, brakes ok but need a little tlc , also starter drags so may have to replace it ($$$) . I will post some pics if my son will help me. I'm not very computer savvy.
