starter problems

Postby ddblanch » Thu Jun 07, 2012 5:59 am

Starter stared giving me problems removed and had it rebuilt. Installed the starter and it just whines and won't turn the bike over. Sarter clutch ? Starter turning the wrong way? never had a problem with the clutch before . The starter was a complete rebuild. Didn't think it was a big issue till I tried to start. They tell me the rotation is the right way info from the rebuild shop. Has any one had this problem or comments.

What were the issues before it was rebuilt? Did you bench test it after it was rebuilt to see if it was functioning properly? When you re-installed, was the bike on the side stand and did you make sure you didn't drop the gear that engages the chain when you slid the starter back into position?
When was the last time you changed your oil and filter.

Starer was lazy would not start bike all the time found a broken soldered joint insde at the main connection. Bench tested good. Gear alignment good had it in and out 20 times over the last couple of evenings.Oil and filter replaced this spring aprox 600 miles ago. No previous issues with the starter clutch.

Ok, so when you attempt to start the bike, the starter just whines but does not engage, is that correct? To me it sounds like the rollers on the Sprague aren't engaging as they are either gunked up or the springs are gone. Try another oil change and leave enough room for a can of seafoam. Be sure to use either 10W-40W or Rotella 15W-40W oil. Then try jump starting the bike and riding it easy for a couple hundred miles and when you get home, shut it off and try starting it again. If it starts, then all you gotta do is change the oil. If it doesn't, then you gotta pull the motor and remove the back cover and clutch to get to the components you need to check/replace.
