1984 gl1200 starter removal

Postby bobberwing » Sat Jun 16, 2012 9:33 am

Have my bike up on centerstand working on forks. Decided to rebuild starter while waiting on parts for forks. After I pulled starter I read on some forum that bike has to be on sidestand to keep gear that is inside engine from coming off and falling down inside. The repair manual does'nt say anything about sidestand. I read somewhere else that the side stand thing only applied to 85 and up gl1200's. When I look inside mine everything seems to be fine. Nothing looks out of place. Am I going to be okay?

You and I have done the same thing.I pulled the starter out when on the center stand. Then read about the side stand.I have done this 3 times since and never had an issue.I read somewhere that if the gear moves you need to do the side stand to align it.
Good luck.

You MAY have difficulties getting the starter to align with the sprocket.
I've used a strong magnet on the outside of the case to hold the sprocket in the center while putting the starter back on
That's the only reason to "side stand"it,to allow the sprocket to hang in the center of the cavity.Upright,it has a tendency to drop a bit

Thanks guys. I should have my parts to fix starter this week then I will try to get it back in. If it doesn't line up with gear I will try the magnet tecnique and if still can't get it I will put on side stand once I get forks back on.
