The intercom is a hot mic system - the mics are always live, so anything either of you says, you should both be able to hear.

The button in the back is for the passenger to be able to transmit on the CB.

on the radio there are a couple of controls, one that switches from speakers to headset, the other a flat nob between the two that adjust the intercom sensitivity. also check the contacts where the cables plug in for dirt, corosion, or bent. also could be a bad cord or headset. J and M is the company that makes them for honda and might help. also sierra electronics fixes both the radio and cb on older goldwings.
one more thing they was a accesory volume control for driver and a handset grip for passenger which could adjust volume for passenger and they could also transmit on the cb.

Thank's been trying to find out what that knob did in the mid? I didn't a knob for the driver and the passager, but there is so many on there. I am going to send radio off to that place, it work's but pop's and crack's goes from one speaker to the other, and the tape don't work. I love the look's of the 85 goldwing. and it only has 75,000 on it. thank's for any help you can give. Mark

You will also want to look at the left side of the bike their might be two knobs ( see photo) they adjust the sound as well. and if you have the cb installed make sure your not locked in transmit.

the two top knobs in the photo are for the intercom i think it also adjusts for riding noise
