85 gl 1200 LTD engine running inconsistently

Postby ScottRempel » Tue Jul 03, 2012 11:49 am

This is quite a site. I've been amazed to discover the Goldwing community and see how everyone helps each other out.

After moving to the wonderful (and wet) NW, I just got a new-to-me 1985 LTD for the princely sum of $350. A friend, who is quite the mechanic and has two Goldwings himself has done all the work below. I owe him my 2nd son (if I ever get one).

The engine has 68K miles and mostly sat for last three years due to a bad alternator. We changed the oil, gas, timing belts, and battery before running it.

Symptoms:
Engine starts fine, runs smoothly, and revs freely up to red line, but begins cutting out after getting warmed up. Symptoms usually begin after 2-5 miles. I once rode 45 miles before it started. It now starts cutting out within a mile or two. It's not the same cylinders that stop firing. Doesn't usually kill the engine and can be restarted right away. Sometimes idles fine for awhile, but then starts cutting out again.

Engine/electrical repairs to date:
• new battery
• PoorBoy kit and alternator (works great)
• New timing belts
• Radiator flushed and checked
• ran seafoam through oil and changed it twice
• ran seafoam through gas and have been through 2 tanks since
• new fuel filter
• new air filter
• various hoses replaced
• new fuel pump
• all connectors have had dialectic grease
• all the lights and displays are working
• checked and replaced spark plugs
• checked spark plug wires
• reversed the coils to see if we could consistently have the same two cylinder fail (wasn’t consistent)
• replaced the coils
• checked the injectors and they are spraying a normal pattern at 38 psi
• replaced fuel pressure regulator – no change, so original is back on
• compression on all 4 cylinders is equal (tested dry and wet – we’re not sure about the accuracy of the compression gauge, but got 103 psi on a 4 cylinders dry, then 125 psi on all 4 after putting some oil in the spark plug hole)
• spark plugs are white on top and black on the sides (running hot and rich)

Is there a way to check the pulse coils/generators?

Is there a way to check the ECU?

Other ideas?

Thanks for any help,

Scott

That's a very common symptom of failing pulse generators. May or may not be your problem, but a lot of people who have reported the same problem, have the problem fixed when the pulse generators are replaced.

Thanks WingAdmin. I just talked to the friend of a friend who has a set, so will try that next. Thanks for your advice.

If you really wanted to test the pulse coil,I devised a cheap method. It found a problem I didn't know I had....A corroded connector plug.My pulse coil was OK.
Some may be "thermal"....opening uo when they get warm.

Oh yea, there are a boat load of tests for the CFI system too.It takes quite a bit to go through each of the sensors and vacuum lines tho.

In the end, it turned out not to be the pulse generators or ECU. The tank had sediment that reduced the fuel flow to about 25%. It didn't always clog it that much, and explains why the cylinder missing kept changing. We cleaned the tank with ball bearings and got it clean (getting that tank out is a huge job!). We wanted to put tank sealer in it, but saw that there is a filter that we couldn't get to, and were afraid the sealer would clog the filter. Is there a way to get that inner tank filter out so we can seal the tank? Thanks, Scott

Hi Harm,

No lights came on. Now that we cleaned out the gas tank, it's running like a charm. I went 130 miles Saturday and it was a smooth as could be. I'm sure that chart will be helpful to the next guy though.

Take care,

Scott

ON MY 85 Aspe I found as soon as the engine got close to normal it woould quit, sometimes restart but more often back fire and stay quit until cooled off. I removed the pulse coils and found cracks and carbon tracking at the pick up points, replaced the coils and have not had a problem since.
I have since been running GM injector cleaner through with great results, this bike runs real good now. Try that as well.
