Radiator cap question

Postby harkgold » Fri Jul 06, 2012 3:14 pm

Is there an automotive radiator cap that will work with my '84 GL1200 Interstate? And if so, does anyone know of a specific part number that will work from say Napa, Advance, O'Reilly's for example?
Just so it has the 11 to 14 PSI rating like the shop manual specifies.
Thanks,
Harkgold :?:

Stant #10227 will do the job. Napa or O'Reilly's can cross reference it to their number for you.

I stopped by my neighborhood Advance store and picked up a Stant 10227 radiator cap.
I took it home and compared it to my present cap and found the Stant to be way too small and doesn't even come close to fitting my radiator. I'm wondering if possibly the factory put the wrong cap in the box. The box is marked 10227 and seems to be too large for the actual cap that was inside. And my original cap fits nicely in the box with plenty of room to spare.
Could someone confirm if the 10227 is the correct cap for the '84 GL1200?

Thanks!

An update and FYI........

I took the much too small 10227 Stant back to Advance auto parts and asked them to please check another 10227 box to be sure they matched in size. They checked several boxes and found the same small thermostat in each box.
I also took with me the original radiator cap from the bike and with some measuring and comparison they discovered that actually the Stant 10229 matches perfectly in size and PSI rating. And strangely the larger 10229 was $2.12 cheaper than the smaller 10227.
Could have been a product number change somewhere along the line.
Oh, well.....the store is only a full six blocks from my house so no big deal. And now I'm good to go!
Again, thanks for your help!

Harkgold!

Ok, I am glad you found what you need, but at one point you were talking radiator cap, then thermostat at another point.
