Problem with stock radio of 1986 GL1200 Aspencade

Postby jakerman » Tue Jul 10, 2012 12:50 pm

Hi All,

I am having a problem with the radio on my 1986 GL1200 Aspencade. I am unable to change the station on the radio. Neither the switch on the handle bars or the presets work. Sometimes I am able to change the station when I first start the bike but most of the time it's just stuck on one station. I got this bike about a month and a half ago and it did not come with an owners manual so if there is some setting that locks the stations I am unaware of it. Does anyone have an suggestions on what the problem could be?

Thanks,
Jeff

With age the switches on the handle bars become gummed up or corroded. You might try squirting some wd40 into the switch and working it up and down. Do this over a few days and see if it works. Then when it works, spray some contact cleaner in the switch. Wd40 will tend to attract dust but works good to loosen up any grease or crud. The pre-sets may not be working because they may not be programed. It's also good to do this to the other handle bar switches as preventive maintenance.

Something I forgot to add, remove the left glove box and trace the wires out to make sure nothing is disconnected. Post back your results.

I tried WD40 with no luck. It almost seems that the radio is stuck on the number 3 memory button for some reason.

Wow I found this old post and it is exactly how my radio acts... Stuck on one station. I know that the handlebar switch is working because when I play a cassette it will work to switch sides. Any clues out there??

Thanks

I think this is a "send it to Sierra Electronics" type of problem. They will normally fix it for a $100 flat fee. It's possible that it's a mechanical switch problem, in which case a quality electrical contact cleaner will help, but it could also be deteriorating electronic components inside the radio itself.

Thanks... I figured as much. Looks like I will budget a little extra for my winter lay up.
