My bike backfires

Postby mikekvia » Wed Jul 11, 2012 4:41 am

Can any one tell me why my 84' GL1200 backfires? It only does it when i let off the gas quickly while decellerating or down shifting. Its not loud and only does it one or two times. I had a truck that did it once and turned out to be an exhaust leak, im wondering if its the same problem here. Also my bike shifts really hard, it "clunks" loudly when i shift gears im curious if this could be the slave cylinder going out or if i need to rebuild the clutch itself thank you!

I'll guess it backfires in the exhaust. There is a slow air cutoff valve under the carb body that may be bad along with its hoses.
Clunky shifting....If the clutch releases about half way on the lever stroke, everything may be OK.
My 84 is a bit clunky,...I started using 20-50 delco oil..it helped somewhat.
Never use a friction modifier additive in the oil like slick 50.Bad for the clutch.
