Front fork wobble

Postby tech1 » Wed Aug 01, 2012 10:25 am

Hello everyone
I had a scary experiance yesterday on my 86 SEI. I had just crested a hill in town going about 30 MPH and the front fork started wobbling so violently that is almost shook my hands off . It felt like a brake caliper stuck maybe. it lasted for about 50 yards. I thought I was going down. Then as quick as it started it quit. I rode it to work again last night and had no more instances. I haven"t had time to inspect it . Any ideas to look for when diagnoising this and has anyone else seen this?
Thanks Tech1

i to have experienced a fork wobble but not as scary as you on my 85 ltd , have checked tire pressure, bearings and triple tree but could not find a problem so i adjusted the dampening on the front forks but unable to tell yet if it fixed or changed the problem...

Check the tire and shock pressures front AND rear. Sometimes the rear tire or shock can cause the wobble, not always, but sometimes. Also check the condition of the tires. Any cupping? Low tread depth? What are your tire pressures? Most run 39-41 psi front and 40-42 psi in the rear.

I got a chance to check things out and both tires were low. I will test ride it tonight to work and leave a post as to the verdict

Low tire pressure will definitely cause wobble. Hope that is all it will be.

Thanks everyone that was it.
You would think being ASE Master Auto and L1 for over 25 years and forgot to check my tire pressures ??
Between both rides I hadnt ridden my SEi for a while. My 09 has TPWS on it as do all cars since the Ford Firestone fiasco Federally mandated. I just forgot to check them . Never again.
