Brake caliper part numbers

Postby Duq_ » Thu Aug 02, 2012 4:09 pm

Hi all,

After the bike had been parked for way too long for various reasons the brakes had seized so I've taken them apart and I'm now looking for new seals. Problem is, I can't figure out the part numbers...
My local dealer recommended using http://www.powersportspro.com to look at fiches for part numbers. First problem there is that my frame number doesn't match. They have frame number range:
GL1200 A (84) MOTORCYCLE, USA, VIN# 1HFSC140-EA000101 TO 1HFSC140-EA022728
Only mine has SC1400EA, not SC140-EA. That minor detail aside, on the fiche for the front caliper I find the following part numbers for dust seals:
45109-GE2-006 DUST SEAL
45109-MA7-006 DUST SEAL
and these for piston seals:
45209-GE2-006 SEAL, PISTON
45209-MA7-006 SEAL, PISTON
On the fiche for the rear caliper I find the following part numbers for the seals:
45109-MA7-006 DUST SEAL
45209-MA7-006 SEAL, PISTON
As you can see the numbers for the rear are the same as for the front and there's my problem: I have three calipers with different size pistons:
25.4mm, 30mm and 32mm. The calipers also have marks on them; '25', '30' and '32'.
So my question is: which part numbers should I be getting to replace the seals on all three calipers?
And the other question: is it normal to have the three different sizes or does that mean one of them has been replaced?
The badge on the frame says my bike was manufactured in May '83.

Any help appreciated!

Thanks,

Ronald

Looking up your bike on Cyclemax's online parts fiche, I see:

Front caliper:

45109-GE2-006 DUST SEAL $3.33 $3.33
45109-MA7-006 DUST SEAL $3.33 $3.33
45209-GE2-006 SEAL, PISTON $4.28 $4.28
45209-MA7-006 SEAL, PISTON $4.13 $4.13

Rear caliper:
45109-MA7-006 DUST SEAL $3.33 $3.33
45209-MA7-006 SEAL, PISTON $4.13 $4.13

So that's the same thing your dealer is seeing on his. All GL1200's use one 32mm piston and one 25mm piston in each front caliper, and two 32mm pistons in the rear caliper. Are you SURE you have a 30mm piston? Have you measured it? Are your calipers original Honda GL1200 calipers?

I don't know if my brake calipers are original. How can I tell?
These are my three calipers:

Left to right: Rear, Front Left, Front Right.
Each of the calipers has a mark with the size of the piston. In the same order as above you can see '30', '32', '25':

I've measured the pistons. Again in the same order:

Not so. One front has 2 x 25mm, the other front has 2 x 32 same as in the rear.

The only 30mm piston I can see for the Wing is from a GL1500. I wonder if someone has swapped a caliper at some time.

'Impossible' is just a level of difficulty! The only stupid question is the one you didn't ask first!
