84 tail lights

Postby jbeganny » Wed Aug 08, 2012 5:55 pm

I don't know why they stopped working and I can't seem to figure out how to fix the tail lights on my 84 goldwing. I have checked the fuses. Brake lights work. I am ready to hotwire them with a toggle switch just so I can ride. Help!

Sounds like you have a bad ground, take a meter see if you have voltage at your lights if not then there is a broken wire some where. Hal

Exactly how do I find a broken wire? Do you know what color wire the tail lights would be in the big harness?

Ill have to find my cylmers and see what colors they are, check the lights for voltage use your meter to see if you are getting 12volts to the lights. Check it from the light to a good ground,if you show 12volts then I would look at the ground for the lights. I will look in my book tomorrow and get back to you. Hal

Come on Hallbud or anyone. Which wire in the big harness runs the tail lights? Or where can I get a wiring diagram that I can actually see well enough to read?

Hello jb. Two wires are involved. Green with a yellow stripe is for the brake light circuit. From the ignition switch is a solid brown wire running the length of the bike to the tail lamp. That solid brown wire is the one you are looking for. Follow that wire and verify that it is energized with the key on it's full length throughout its length and the several connectors on it's way with a simple test lamp with a sharp probe. (available at any auto supply.) Clean the connectors with contact cleaner or WD40 and compressed air.Work some green scotchbrite back and forth inside the socket and install a new bulb. Finally insure the solid green wire attached to the socket is fully grounded, green is the wire that provides frame ground. Good luck man. Let us know what you find.
