Troubleshooting left turn signal

Postby gof » Sun Sep 02, 2012 1:45 pm

I am thinking I messed this up when I had the left rear bag off. I am prepping the 1984 for sale now.

With the bike OFF and ignition on, the left signal works. But, it also flashes the brake light on the dash.
With the bike running, using the front or rear brake causes the left turn signal on the dash to light slightly.
With the bike running and the left turn signal on, the rear flasher does not light and the brake light on the dash flashes opposite the signal.

Sometimes just taking some time to dig in, is a good thing.

I removed the seat and got a basic understanding of what connectors and how many wires controlled the lights on the rear. I found some wiring that had been hacked into for some reason. I removed the additional "leech" connectors and ended up finding a cut wire down in the loom cover.

I took off the left rear bag and also took off the tailight assembly. Just to be sure, I checked both bulbs and other wiring. Once I spliced the cut wire back together, the rear light light and turn signal light both worked correctly without effecting the brake light.

Now it's just a matter of tidying everything back up again and reassembly. Just a few more small jobs to do and then I will place this 1984 for sale.

Those vampire clips should be outlawed. They work in the short term for people who can't (or are too lazy to) solder wires, but they cause nothing but problems down the road.
