Diagnosing GL1200 - Hard to Start When Warm

Postby Goldwing3251 » Wed Sep 19, 2012 8:28 pm

I have a friend that has a 1985 GL1200 that he's having problems with. He's taken great care of it but when we go riding and take a little break he sometimes has problems getting it to start back up. Additionally, when he first starts the bike when it's cold it runs rough. Any suggestions as to the problem with the bike? When he took it into the dealer they didn't find the issue. Thanks for any help!

A number of questions come up in order to poke in the right direction.
Are the choke plungers on the carbs pulling out when the choke is activated? Do they return when the choke is released?
What does the bike do when it finally does fire? Does it blow any black smoke for a second or two? Does it seem to run rough for a spell as cylinders "come on line" both hot and cold?
Has he pulled the plugs to "read" them?
Does the bike run strong when it finally does fire up?
Does the choke make any difference? What about when pulled on after the bike is running?

The problem could be dirty carbs, or it could be a weak spark. When cranking the voltage will drop and the coil primary will only see 9 or 10 volts. If the high tension side is weak because of plugs, plug wires or caps the spark will be small or intermittent when cranking over. If the mixture is lean it will be hard to light it.

Get him to do some investigating and get back to us.
