1984 GL1200 front shock dampening

Post by Brent1984 » Wed Sep 19, 2012 10:55 pm

I have only had my 1200 for a month or so...what is fork dampening?

When my wife rides with me, I know the handling will change but...if we stop at a light on a slight up hill grade. It seems like we are completely leaning backwards, even before we take off??

I have 50psi in the rear air suspension...10-15 psi up front.

On the front shocks there is an adjustable knob, it was set at 2...we set it at 3, but I haven't taken her for a ride yet or I haven't taken it by myself wery far yet.

Dampening is the oil in the forks slowing down how fast the shocks will extend out and to some degree, how fast they can be compressed.
Without the dampening, the front end would just bounce about on every bump.
The adjusters on the traxx is suppose to control nose diving during heavy braking.
It controls oil flow inside the forks and is activated by the brake calipers movement, pushing in a control plunger.
I had poor rear air shocks on mine and replaced them with standard coil over progressive shocks.
I also found 4 psi was plenty in the front. It's measured with the bike on the center stand, forks extended,no load.Same for the rear.
Mine bottomed out with 2 up and 50psi in the rear.Just bad shocks.
