85 motor going into 84 frame

Postby Keithbjohnson » Wed Sep 26, 2012 5:38 pm

I put the motor from an 85 linited into my 84 frame. I'm having trouble figuring out the wiring. Ihave the 6 wire bundle meeting my 4 wire bundle up front on the frame. I think the bigger problem is figuring out what to connect to what for the timing and ignition. I have the 2 wires coming back from the timing belt area toward the old 4 wire plug on my frame. If they connect to any wires in the 4 wire plug, which ones and what about the other 2 wires on that plug? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have loved this bike for 20 years and would love to be able to ride it again. I read that starfleet had attempted this but I'm not sure if he had a positive outcome.

Are you saying your putting the engine from an 85 limited edition into an 84 frame? converting from fuel injection to carbs? If so I think the right hand head is different on the carbed and fi engine. Also the pulse gens are on the rear on the 84 and front on every other model.

yes , I'm puttingthe 85 fuel injected motor in an 84. I will be converting to carbs. I've read that the pulse generator is in differant locations. Do I need to also switch the right head to make this work?

I have helped swap engines but not carbed to fi or vise versa. It is either the right head or the right cam shaft that is different but I cant remember which or what the difference is.
I know it can be done though the general consensus ive seen on other forums was that it was much easier to trade the 85 fi engine for a carbed model engine to swap than to swap from the FI to the carbs.
