Starting problem after shut-off

Post by mgatortpd » Fri Sep 28, 2012 9:04 pm

My father-n-law has a 1984 Honda Aspencade 1200. He has a starting problem, when he first starts the bike, it starts fine..........but then after riding the bike a short distance, he shuts the bike down with the ignition key, but then when he trys to re-start the bike soon after, the battery acts like it is low and the engine will not start. He says the engine will turn over but is weak as if the battery is weak. However, if he waits about 10 minutes, and try's again, it will fire right up. So, what might be the problem? He has replaced the battery, a new charging system and all checks out fine. He thinks it might be vapor locking? Any suggestions, thanks!

Sounds to me like your starter is in need of a rebuild. When the starters on these old wings wear out they do exactly what you are describing. I had the exact same thing happen on my 84. Rebuilt the starter and she cranks right up every time. Even after hours of riding. There are many how to articles on here to help with the rebuild and removing and reinstalling your starter. Good luck.

Yup, the starters can get a bit.... cranky...when they get hot :D
Sorry.... rebuild, grease and fix. Pay attention to the grounding plate for the brushes.Polish the contact area clean of paint.
