86 1200 sei will not start

Postby plumbermullins » Sun Sep 30, 2012 7:20 pm

Just bought an 86 sei for real short money off a dealer in the area that will not start, it's all there last ran in early part of year. his mech's worked on it to try and get it running said it needed a computer I don't think they put much time in it. it cranks over no start no fuel or fuel system light comes on before attempt, during or after I think the light might be burnt out. ? is would that keep it from starting? any ideas i am very mechanical and a good diagnostician but i don't have any books on this bike yet. I would like to add this bike to my stable if I can get it running

By "fuel system light" do you mean the LED's on the CFI module?
Download " Honda Goldwing GL1200L Limited Service Manual Supplement (15.8 MB)" in the Manual section.
Section 10 deals with the tests on the CFI.I'd look at the wires that should have 12 volts first. There's a pinout and color code there.
Let us know what you find and need from there.

I'll look into the schematic.I believe the lights go on as a computer self test. I'll check into a test method.do download everything you can.it will be easier to reference a page # than a long description.

This should get you started....There is a "main relay"..it can be substuted with another like it from the relay cluster.Obviously check the fuses, kill switch and the tilt sensor. It kills power to the relay and entire system should the bike tip over. This is a common part to fail on the gl1500's too.

Did you get the manual downloaded OK.?

I love these forums downloaded the supplement went thru the ecu diagnostic ladder and found what I should have checked first the extra fuse system for the ecu. changed the dog bone with spare from the 1100 and bada bing it starts and runs. some mechanics at the local bike shop said the computer might be bad, although the bike may have been out of their realm of work.
now to check an alleged bad frame around the center stand which I already encountered with my 1000.
re welded and beefed up that cross member all is right with the 1000.'
Guess I stole a real special classic my lucky day

Thank for the suggestions and help
