Oil in timing belt case

Postby Sabresmith » Thu Mar 18, 2010 12:29 pm

Just bought an 85 GL1200 and was going thru it and found a small amount of oil in the timing case. Can't really see where it is coming from but think it is coming from the crankshaft. Any ideas and how serious is this.
Update. Honda says they don't carry the crankshaft seal. Any ideas? Maybe an after market seal number so I can chase it down at a parts house.

There are three seals up there that can leak oil into the timing case - both camshafts, and the crank. It's not a huge job replacing any of them (engine doesn't have to come out, nor does the case need to be split), but you want to find out which one it is before you replace it. Just wipe everything clean, run it for a bit, and see if you can find which one the oil is coming from.

On my 86 the leak was coming from a slotted plug about the size of a dime. It is located above the crank on the left side near the upper part of the timing belt as you look at the timing belts. A new doughnut washer solved my problem.
